Number: MER0003WMZ In Group Research & Development (RD), we design the automotive generations of the future. We mean innovative products with the highest quality and efficient development processes. We are already working on vehicles that will secure the technology leadership of Mercedes-Benz in the future. The RD/EBK department is responsible for the entire development chain from the investigation of new technologies to the system design of traction batteries in Mercedes-Benz AG. New concepts for the physical design of future energy storage are developed and investigated in the Technology & System Design Team at Untertürkheim. We also look at new technologies at system level and evaluate them in terms of their use in future battery projects. Do you want to actively shape the electrification of our mobility? Then you are right here! The further market penetration of electric vehicles poses numerous technical and economic challenges that are decisively determined by the battery system. Progress in energy content, performance and costs can be achieved not only by using improved material combinations, but also by researching advanced battery algorithms, including physical models. Within the scope of this master thesis, an innovative control concept is to be developed which is based on an existing model and controls the relevant manipulated variables in order to enable optimal battery operation. Particular focus is on the real-time capability of the selected control approach under limited hardware resources. The following aspects are provided: Independent incorporation into the functioning of lithium-ion cells, control methods and the prior art for real-time-capable modeling and charging methods Selection and evaluation of appropriate regulatory approaches Implementation on resource-restricted hardware Validation of the control algorithm at the test bench Documentation and presentation of results The final topics will be discussed with the attending university, you and us. The activity can begin from March 2026.
Master's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, information technology, physics, technical cybernetics or similar Programming skills are provided, ideally in Matlab/Simulink Practical experience in the implementation of control algorithms, ideally on microcontrollers and embedded systems, is absolutely desirable. Experiences in modeling batteries and thermal management systems are advantageous Knowledge of lithium-ion cell technology desirable, in particular physics of quick charging processes Very good knowledge of German and English
