Tenure-Track Professorship (W1) ''Autonomous Particle Accelerators''

Branch: Humanities Branch: Humanities

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – The University of the Helmholtz Association In dialogue with society, KIT develops solutions for major challenges – from climate change, energy transition and sustainable use of natural resources to artificial intelligence, technological sovereignty and demographic change. As the University in the Helmholtz Association, KIT combines scientific excellence from knowledge gain to application orientation under one roof – and is thus in a unique position to advance this transformation. As a university of excellence, KIT offers its more than 10,000 employees and its 22 800 students outstanding opportunities to shape a sustainable and resilient future. KIT – Science for Impact. The area V – Physics and Mathematics offers at the next possible time, limited to 6 years, one Tenure Track Professorship (W1) “Autonomous particle accelerators”

A personality (w/m/d) that develops the role of KIT in research, teaching, and innovation in the establishment of novel methods in the design, operation and research of particle accelerators is sought. This concerns both future accelerators, which can only be enabled by the development of new concepts, and the efficient autonomous operation of existing accelerators. The tenure track professorship focuses on topics such as innovative (including AI-based) methods for operating accelerators in the non-equal weight state, the development of accelerator designs with reduced size, improved stability and higher cost and energy efficiency of existing and new systems, such as compact storage rings. Research includes the diagnosis and real-time control of instabilities in accelerators across the entire scale, from heat to collective effects in electron punches. The implementation and demonstration of research results at the Accelerator Technology Platform (ATP) test facilities at KIT and, where appropriate, with cooperation partners is expected. (w/m/d) builds a working group on Autonomous Particle Accelerators at the Institute of Accelerator Physics and Technology (IBPT) and conducts this independently. He/she participates in the programme-oriented promotion of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, in particular in the programme “Materie and Technologies”. In addition to new accelerator technologies, research topics and tasks in the programme also include methods of electron beam control and diagnosis, as well as the operation and design of the Institute's accelerator test plants. Within the scope of the activity, the job owner (w/m/d) cooperates closely with the colleagues of ATP, in particular in the disciplines of physics, electrical engineering and computer science. He/she actively promotes third-party funding from national and international sources and actively supports the transfer of scientific/technical results in applications. Appropriate participation in course, special and export lectures is expected in teaching. You will perform major research tasks with a teaching obligation of 6 SWS, insofar as you have been evaluated positively, in the rest 4 SWS.

Prerequisite for a successful application to this tenure track professorship (W1) is a newly recruited junior research group (e.g. DFG Emmy-NoetherRenewal Group, Helmholtz Young Research Groups, ERC Starting Grants, junior research groups of ministries (in particular BMBF) or the Sofia Kovalevskaja program of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation), whose funding period has expired at the time of publication of this ad. In addition, a completed PhD in physics, outstanding internationally visible scientific achievements in the field of accelerator physics and pedagogical suitability are required. The prerequisites for recruitment are valid according to § 14 para. 2 KIT Act i. V. m. § 51 Landeshochschulgesetz Baden-Württemberg and the Quality Assurance Concept for Junior Professorships and Tenure Track Professorships at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). .
