Research Assistant Digital Engineering AI (m/f/d)
The Fraunhofer Society is one of the world's leading organisations for application-oriented research. 75 institutes develop groundbreaking technologies for our economy and society – more precisely: 32 000 people from technology, science, administration and IT. You know, who comes to Fraunhofer wants and can change something. For yourself, for us and the markets of today and tomorrow. At the Fraunhofer Institute for Design Engineering Mechatronik IEM in Paderborn, we explore how the engineering of the future looks – together with strong partners and a lot of passion for technology. Our teams develop solutions that are really in use: from smart products to connected production systems to digital services and modern software. We think innovation from the first concept to the implementation. And right here you come into play. The "Advanced Systems Engineering" department deals with the central question of how complex systems can be developed across their entire life cycle, continuously and efficiently. A special focus is on digital engineering, which combines approaches from systems engineering and model-based systems engineering with modern technologies such as artificial intelligence, semantic knowledge graphs and the digital twin to form a holistic engineering approach. The "Digital Engineering" group develops and implements continuous engineering approaches based on model-based methods, integrated data flows as well as data and AI-based technologies. We consider engineering holistically – from requirement management, system architecture and modeling, configuration and data management to backup and operation. A special focus is on the integration of methods, processes and IT systems, for example in the context of MBSE, PLM/ALM and PDM landscapes, in order to create consistent and scalable engineering ecosystems. Our goal is to support companies in the sustainable transformation of their engineering processes – from strategic orientation to operational implementation in concrete development environments. In addition, we promote sustainable competence building through training, workshops and training formats in the areas of digital engineering, systems engineering and AI-based development. We are looking for personalities who want to bring engineering and AI together and not only develop solutions, but also penetrate methodically, convey them convincingly and translate them into practice. .

Your tasks • Your profile • What we offer
You work in research and industrial projects at the interface of Engineering IT, PLM, ALM, MBSE, Systems Engineering and AI. Reliably analyse existing process and tool landscapes, develop target images and roadmaps for digital continuity and accompany piloting, introductions and further developments in close cooperation with our partner companies. You integrate new AI functions into existing tool landscapes, data flows and engineering processes and evaluate their added value in the real application context. Interdisciplinary, you work with colleagues, industrial partners and contracting authorities, prepare results to address and present them convincingly. Last but not least, you will publish your results in technical contributions, participate in workshops, training and acquisition activities and develop the Advanced Systems Engineering theme.
You have a very well completed university degree in Computer Science, Economic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering or a comparable technical degree course. To do this, you will have at least first experience in several of the following areas: PLM, ALM, Engineering IT, Systems Engineering, MBSE, Tool Integration, Data Management or Technical Transformation Projects. Ideally, you have already been able to participate in consulting, introductory or further development projects – for example in the context of PLM strategies, engineering processes, tool landscapes, data models, traceability or digital continuity. Ideally, you have practice in at least one established engineering IT or PLM/ALM platform, such as team center, wind chill, 3DEXPERIENCE, polarion, code beamer, DOORS Next, jama or cameo. With the interaction of technical and organizational changes, you are familiar – and you can translate requirements, processes, roles, data and IT structures into a resilient and sustainable target image. You are interested in the use of modern AI technologies in engineering or have first insights into large language models, assistance systems, workflow automation, analytics or intelligent knowledge access. In German (min. C1) and English, you can also communicate technical content to customers, project partners and scientific audiences in a comprehensible, structured and convincing manner.
Look forward to a position where you drive the innovations of tomorrow. A pronounced team culture with flat hierarchies is of course for us. This means: high appreciation and trust, a pleasant and family-friendly working atmosphere, team events, joint lunch and creative colleagues. A modern working environment with flexible working hours and the possibility of home office control with respect to your professional and private challenges await you. Do you take back public transport for your work? Then use our job ticket! More exciting benefits for employees can be found on our website. We actively support you with the agreement of working and family life and are proud of the award ''Family-friendly company'' in the district of Paderborn. We support your career development with a targeted career planning, a wide range of professional and personal training, as well as a close support on the way to your doctorate. With the funding programme »Fraunhofer TALENTA«, we offer women in research the comprehensive opportunity to bring their careers forward individually and specifically through appropriate training offers. You receive a fair payment according to the public service collective agreement (Bund) and an occupational pension scheme (VBL).
